Last week Chloe's class had it's 2nd field trip of the month and final for the year. This was a biggie, for sure. The field trip would be to what is known as "The one room schoolhouse" where all the kids prepare by dressing and acting like they are in 1888. That turned out to be the single biggest part of the trip because in preparation each child would be responsible for putting together a period correct outfit to wear. Chloe enlisted the help of my mom(grandma Sue) to make some of the missing pieces after finding some of the stuff at a local shop downtown that sells this stuff(apparently). The kids were also given a specific list(of suggestions) for things to pack to eat as well as things they could not/should not bring because after all it would be 1888 and they did not have plastic water bottles and zip lock baggies. Basically, a fair amount of stress and pressure leading up to the trip which once again I was lucky enough to be enlisted to drive.
I told Heather part of me didn't want to go if it meant allowing a parent that wanted to help but had not been able to but it turned out they were almost short a driver anyway so they needed me to do it either way, lol. I'm glad I was able to go as I knew based on all the work going into this it would be fun for the kids but also neat for photos. =)
When we arrived we were greeted by a man in a hat who had the kids line up while asking them questions and explaining some things about the schoolhouse. After, the teacher for the day would come out and lead the students in the flag salute before entering the schoolhouse. From there, the lesson included of course period specific information where when called upon, students were required to stand and "make their manners" before speaking to the teacher. All this really included was a formal acknowledgement of the teacher by name and the boys would bow and the girls would curtsy. Cute.
After a while the class would split in 2 and some would stay inside for a lesson and some would go outside for "recess" where they were allowed to indulge in activities the kids would have back then in 1888. The inside lesson was in writing which involved using a feather and an inkwell. The lesson ended inside with all the students in a spelling bee, boys VS girls in which the boys ultimately were victorious. The kids would then have lunch outside and we would return to their regular school where they we successfully time traveled back to present day.
All of the kids seemed to really enjoy themselves and I believe it is a field trip they will remember as they grow up. How lucky for them that something like this exists and is local to us.
Just a few photos from the trip to kind of tell the story of what Chloe and her classmates were able to see and experience.
Have a great weekend, folks~ Enjoy.
